78hq7r. Eva Longoria's 'Flamin' Hot' Cheetos movie brought out my Chicano prideJune 10, 2023 Director Eva Longoria is seen on the set of āFlaminā Hot.ā Anna Kooris/Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures When I met Eva Longoria at the Four Seasons hotel in San Francisco, I learned that we have a lot in common. You probably didnāt expect to read that today. But itās true ā weāre both Mexican American, and we both love Flaminā Hot Cheetos. OK, thatās not too much in common, and I already knew weāre both Mexican American. But the fact that we both love Hot Cheetos is significant because the actress from āThe Young and the Restless,ā āDesperate Housewivesā and CNNās foodie-centric āEva Longoria Searching for Mexicoā recently directed a new movie called āFlaminā Hot,ā which tells the true story of Richard MontaƱez. MontaƱez, the self-proclaimed āgodfather of Hispanic branding,ā is a Chicano man who started as a janitor at the Frito-Lay chip company and eventually became a marketing executive who made the Latino community a viable market for a conglomerate that usually catered to whiter tastes. However, the story of MontaƱez is not one commonly known outside of the Los Angeles Latino community. In an interview with Longoria and producer DeVon Franklin, who is an Oakland native, Longoria told SFGATE that she had never heard of MontaƱezās journey. She called that absence of knowledge sad because it is such an American pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps tale. āI gotta tell the world about this story,ā Longoria said. āI was so proud of him without ever knowing him. Everybody could learn so much from his journey and be inspired to say ⦠I can do anything.āā Richard MontaƱez attends a screening of Eva Longoriaās āFlaminā Hotā at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes on June 2 in Los Marroquin/Getty Images for Hulu Even though a 2021 LA Times article ādebunkedā MontaƱezās claim that he invented Flaminā Hot Cheetos, Longoria and Franklin were adamant that the movie represents the true story of how these chips became a phenomenon and the lasting impact of MontaƱezās contributions. āThe article had an agenda, and it serviced that agenda,ā Franklin said. āWe try to be responsible storytellers, so we told Richardās story while also telling how all these different things worked together. We feel like anybody that wants to know the real story, watch the movie, and it speaks for itself.ā The importance of heritage āFlaminā Hot,ā directed by Longoria, produced by Franklin and starring Jesse Garcia, Annie Gonzalez and Tony Shalhoub, is airing now on Hulu. The movie opens with MontaƱez as a little kid, in the small California town of Guasti, near Ontario in Southern California. After he plays in the vineyard where his family works, MontaƱezās grandfather takes him to a barn and tells him about the significance of his family name, his heritage. āIf you can show āem what a MontaƱez can do,ā his grandfather says in Spanish, āthey canāt tell you nothinā.ā It is implied that the only thing little Richie MontaƱez needs in life to succeed is pride in his heritage. Franklin said one of the reasons he was so interested in making this film is he felt a similar connection with his uncle, an Oakland pastor named Dr. Williams. His uncle helped him understand what it meant to be a Franklin and to be proud of who he is after his father struggled with alcoholism most of Franklinās life. āIt was [my uncle] who really instilled self-determination [in me] because he was doing marches with Martin Luther King Jr. in Lynchburg, Virginia, and he started a church at the age of 60,ā Franklin said. āHe brought to us discipline and hard work. He was all about, Hereās how you become a strong Black man.āā For Longoria, the intrigue of the project and MontaƱez was a little more on the nose. āI remember as a young girl getting on the school bus with a bean taco every day, and everybody else had a Pop-Tart,ā she explained, which mimics an opening scene in āFlaminā Hot.ā āI was like, What is that? Thatās so cool,ā and they were like, Whatās that?ā [in reference to] the bean taco. It was the exact experience that Richard had taking a burrito to school every morning.ā As a young man, MontaƱez lived the life that many young Chicanos in Los Angeles did during the 1970s ā ābeing invisible but still getting a beatdownā by the police, as one line in the movie says. He befriended gangsters, got in trouble with the law and did what he had to do to survive in a world that was against people of his color. Jesse Garcia and Dennis Haysbert play Richard MontaƱez and Clarence C. Baker in āFlaminā Hot.ā Anna Kooris/Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures But after having his first child, he realized he had to live on the straight and narrow to provide for his family. Without a high school diploma, he finally found a job as a janitor working for the Frito-Lay company at its factory in San Bernardino County in 1982. And this is where the Hot Cheetos come in. Finding the right spice After working as a jack-of-all-trades at Frito-Lay for eight years, MontaƱez watched a company video featuring then-CEO Roger Enrico, played by Shalhoub whom San Franciscans will remember from the TV series āMonkā. The video encouraged all employees to āthink like a CEOā during a tough financial period for the company. Hunter Jones, Jesse Garcia and Brice Gonzalez are seen in a still from āFlaminā Hot.ā Emily Aragones/Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures MontaƱez took it upon himself to do just that. His āaha momentā came while eating elote ā corn on the cob dusted with Tajin seasoning or Tapatio hot sauce ā in the park with his two kids. The spicy treats made by street vendors were a typical snack for Mexican Americans, but in the corner stores, they were used to seeing chips that were made for white people. āI mean, who eats Cool Ranch anyway?ā MontaƱez asks his friend in a comedic scene at a corner store. A suburban white woman reaches between them and grabs a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos. āThat lady,ā his buddy responds with a smirk. Jesse Garcia and Eva Longoria work on the set of āFlaminā Hot.āEmily Aragones/Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures But MontaƱez knew there was an entirely untouched market that Frito-Lay could capitalize on with the right product ā the Latino community. The chip just had to represent the flavors that they were used to. He and his wife Judy, played by the fantastic Gonzalez, who fans might know from the Netflix show āGentefied,ā taste-tested different chile pairings for the right mix that would excite their community. In 1992, they eventually landed on one, which MontaƱez mailed to Enrico, who ended up loving it ā but more so, he saw MontaƱezās self-determination. Whatever spice mix the MontaƱezes created surely worked because Hot Cheetos are now synonymous with Latinos. From left, Brice Gonzalez, Annie Gonzalez, Jesse Garcia and Hunter Jones star in āFlaminā Hot.ā Emily Aragones/Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures Longoria canāt remember her life without the spicy Cheetos. In fact, she more so remembers the time she first had a regular cheddar cheese bag of Cheetos that werenāt the Flaminā Hot variety. āI opened them, and I thought I got a bad bag,ā she laughed. āI was like, Oh no, this is a bad bag.ā Somebody had to tell me that these were regular Cheetos. I said, Why are there regular Cheetos? Thatās so dumb.āā Chicano pride My first introduction to Flaminā Hot Cheetos was almost a mirror opposite of the food assimilation stories that Longoria and MontaƱez shared about bean tacos and burritos. I went to a bilingual elementary school in the Mission District of San Francisco, which has the largest Latino population in the city. I actually felt left out when I didnāt know what Flaminā Hot Cheetos were. I would see my peers with red chip dust on their fingers, which they would lick to get every last bit of spice. Their shirts were blotchy with stains from wiping down their now-saliva-coated hands, their tongues red and bellies satisfied. I wanted what they had ā Flaminā Hot Cheetos. Richard Rodriguez/Getty Images for Searchlight Pic Longoria wanted to eat Pop-Tarts to fit in. I wanted to eat Flaminā Hot Cheetos to fit in. To this day, these spicy, addictive, jagged-baseball-bat-shaped crunchy corn puffs caked in magical red powder are still my favorite snack. Now that I know the story of MontaƱez, being Chicano has a much greater significance. I can just imagine my guito, or grandpa in English, coming to me in my dreams and proclaiming, āEres Madrigal. They canāt tell you nothinā.ā
Eva Longoria may just now be making her feature film directorial debut with Flaminā Hot, but sheās been laying the groundwork for nearly 20 years ā all the way back to her breakout role on Desperate Housewives. After a decade of directing TV episodes for shows including Black-ish, Jane the Virgin and Gordita Chronicles, Longoria noted that for Flaminā Hot āall of my TV experience paid off because we move at a very ambitious, fast pace and this movie was very ambitious in our scheduling. I really think wow, all of my 10 years in TV prepared me for this moment, which is a film set.ā āAnd I used Desperate Housewives as my film school, thatās where I really learned everything,ā she continued at Fridayās Los Angeles premiere of the movie, which tells the story of Richard MontaƱez, a Frito Lay janitor who says he came up with the idea for Flaminā Hot Cheetos. āWe had so many directors come through there and so many episodes; 10 years on a set and I paid attention.ā And speaking of the hit series, the carpet served as a mini Desperate Housewives reunion when Jesse Metcalfe dropped by to hug Longoria and pose for photos together. The movieās stars also sang Longoriaās praises as a director, with Jesse Garcia who plays MontaƱez applauding her for being āvery specific on the story she wanted to tell, being very passionate about telling Richardās story.ā Annie Gonzalez who plays MontaƱezās wife Judy added that Longoria was, āan executer through and through ā weāve seen it from her philanthropic work, she has non-profits, sheās produced TV shows, sheās directed TV thatās been brilliant, this is no different. When Eva does something, she does [it] to totality, and she does it amazingly.ā Amidst MontaƱezās heroic story ā which he documented in his own book, detailing his eventual journey to becoming a vice president at Frito-Layās parent company PepsiCo ā questions have arisen about his narrative. The Los Angeles Times published a story in 2021 that alleged that MontaƱez actually did not invent the Flaminā Hot Cheeto, reporting that a Frito-Lay internal investigation had revealed that another segment of the company had developed the product and had no record that MontaƱez was involved in the creation or test market. The story broke just before Flaminā Hot started shooting. Shortly after, PepsiCo issued a statement that āthe information we shared with the media has been misconstrued by someā and attributed āthe launch and success of Flaminā Hot Cheetos and other products to several people who worked at PepsiCo, including Richard MontaƱez.ā It also added, āwe have no reason to doubt the stories he shares about taking the initiative to create new product ideas for the Cheetos brand.ā Producer DeVon Franklin told The Hollywood Reporter that the report never put the movie in danger as āI had gone to meet with the PepsiCo and Frito-Lay execs back in 2019, it was years before. I sat down with them and got all of the information that I needed to get; a lot of information was already in the article, so we had already incorporated a lot of the information that we got into the script,ā he said, confirming no updates were made to address the Times story. āWhen the article came out it wasnāt like there was anything in there that we didnāt already know, and thatās why when people see the movie theyāll see the true story,ā Franklin continued. āThey will see how all of these things worked together. Frito-Lay and PepsiCo have seen the film, and theyāre proud of the film, and they feel like we did not only Richard justice but the Hot Cheeto justice.ā MontaƱez himself walked the carpet alongside wife Judy, noting that they didnāt read the story but have heard the details. āIām used to fighting my entire life ā since the day I was born Iāve been fighting, Iāll probably fight until the day I day, and thatās the story of the person who comes from the places we come from. Itās always a struggle,ā he said in response. āBut Iām so happy for the movie because it gives answers to every question you may have about it, so Iām happy with that.ā And on a film where Hot Cheetos play a central character, just how many were consumed on set? Longoria said she opted for white cheddar Cheetos since Flaminā Hots werenāt actively part of shooting until the end of the movie; Garcia revealed, āI ate exactly five. I had my first Hot Cheeto during the take where I taste the Hot Cheeto off the line, and we did five takes.ā Diane Warren, who wrote original song āThe Fire Insideā performed by Becky G for the film, teased she even got into the snack for inspiration āWhen I saw the rough cut of the movie I did eat a bag, and it was pretty spicy, like oh The Fire Inside,ā OK. It really was.ā Flaminā Hot is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
